The next eight weeks went by quickly, and Carlisle told me that there was a small chance of miscarriage now. I went home again but went to Esme and Carlisle's every day. Jasper was there on Skype for every scan. One night, the day before my sixteen-week scan, I was talking to Jasper, and eating my craved Oreos, when I felt a little nudge. I stopped mid sentence and gasped, which sent Jasper into a panic.
"Alice? Are you alright?" he asked. I giggled and stroked my stomach.
"I felt our baby kick," I smiled. Jasper laughed,
"You scared me then," he told me, then gave me a weird look as I looked down at my stomach, "The baby is still there, Alice. You don't have to keep checking."
"No," I giggled, running my hand over my stomach, "I think..."
I pulled up my top and gasped, "I have a bump!"
Jasper chuckled, "I can't see."
I stood up and pulled up my top, "It's only little, but our baby's showing us it's there!"
I stroked my bump gently, and Jasper smiled, "However big you get, you'll always be beautiful."
That made me smile. I blew him a kiss, and he blew two back.
"Four more months and you'll be home," I sighed happily, "And you can be here to see the rest of the scans, and when our baby is born. That's the only thing I'm scared of."
Jasper smiled, but then sighed, "I have to tell you something, Alice."
My face fell, and suddenly I got very worried. My emotions proved correct.
"They've offered me a job here. And...I've taken it. It's for a year. Starting next week. I can come back for a month when my volunteering was supposed to end."
My happiness crumbled away like the Oreo in my hand.
"Oh," I fixed a smile on my face, even though I felt like crying.
"I'm sorry. Are you alright?" Jasper asked softly. I nodded.
"I'm really happy for you, Jazz," I smiled, "I'll manage."
Jasper smiled, "My brave little Alice."
I giggled, stroking my stomach as the baby kicked gently. I ate one more Oreo, then pushed the packet away, "The baby wants Oreos. I can't stop eating them!"
Jasper laughed, and then sighed, "I miss you. It's not right sleeping in a single bed."
I sighed too, "It's not right sleeping in a double bed on my own," I started crying, and Jasper's hand came closer to the camera. I was guessing he was stroking my cheek on the screen.
"Don't cry, my love. I'll be back soon. A whole month for us to be together. Don't cry, it's not good for you and the baby."
I nodded and wiped my eyes, terrified I'd hurt my baby.
"I'm exhausted. I think I might go to bed. I'll talk soon, Alice," Jasper smiled and blew me a kiss, and then a second aimed at my stomach. I sent two back to him, and then he went offline.
I called Esme straightaway and told her about Jasper's new job. I couldn't help crying. Esme soothed me and told me the same thing Jasper told me about crying.
"The time will fly, believe me. You won't be alone. You have me, Carlisle, Rosalie. Everyone's here for you. You'll have your baby before you know it too. Only five months until the little one arrives," Esme murmured, "Jasper will keep in contact."
I sighed and nodded, "I want him here."
