I stood in the bathroom staring at myself in the mirror. I was desperate to take a test, so I got dressed and walked into town. The twenty-four hour chemist was open as I'd anticipated, and so I shyly entered the deserted shop. The woman at the counter smiled warmly at me.
"You're up early, sweetie," she said softly, "How can I help you?"
"Can...can I have a pregnancy test?" I mumbled shyly. The woman smiled. I saw her name tag. "Julia". Julia touched my shoulder.
"Have you been trying for a baby?" she asked. I nodded.
"For eighteen months...and nothing," I replied, "I really hope it's this time."
Julia smiled more, "I really hope it's positive. That's five dollars."
I thanked her and handed over the money, and then walked home. Esme was up and waiting for me in the living room.
"I heard you go out, sweetie," she murmured, "Are you alright?"
I nodded, keeping the pregnancy test hidden in my pocket, "I just needed some air."
Esme smiled and hugged me gently, "Do you feel better?"
I shook my head, "I threw up earlier."
She sat me on her knee on the couch, not talking and just rocking me slowly. I cuddled close to her, and then Esme gave me her laptop.
"I'll buy yours today, but go on Facebook and see Jasper's pictures. Go on skype if you want to," she smiled and stroked my hair. I got onto Facebook, letting out a sigh at the sight of my profile picture: a photo of Jasper and I cuddled together. Jasper's photos were the top of my news feed. There were photos of him with a lion. Sure, the lion was under sedation, but it was still pretty incredible. My favourite was a photo of him with a monkey on his shoulder. A baby monkey was nestled into it's mother's arms. I giggled, then saw something that made me really smile. There was a photo of a baby elephant, with a caption "Little Alice, named after my beautiful wife."
I put my hand to my mouth and looked at Esme, who smiled.
"That's so sweet of him," she murmured.
I went upstairs to my room to talk to Jasper on Skype. He was online, and I guessed that Esme had told him I would be online.
"Jasper!" I smiled, "You named a baby elephant after me!"
Jasper laughed, "I knew you'd like it. She was born the day after I got here, and they let me name her. I know elephants are your favourite animals."
Then Jasper frowned, "Are you alright? You look pale."
I shook my head, and ran to the bathroom to throw up. I still had the test in my pocket, and I came out of the bathroom with the test in my hand, watching for the line. Or lines.
"Are you OK?" Jasper looked worried, and I nodded. I knew he couldn't see the test, so he frowned again when I kept looking at my knees.
"I think so," I mumbled, distracted. Jasper kept calling my name, trying to talk to me.
I gasped, and I felt my face go white.
"Alice? What's wrong? Talk to me!" Jasper demanded, and I could tell he was losing patience.
"Jasper..." I whispered, and then I dissolved into sobs, "Oh my God. Oh my God!"
"Alice, tell me whats going on! Please!" Jasper looked alarmed.
"I'm pregnant!" I wailed, "Jasper! I'm pregnant! Oh my God! I'm pregnant! We're having a baby! I'm pregnant!"
Jasper
I froze, "You're pregnant?"
Alice nodded, the tears streaming down her cheeks, "We're having a baby,"
I blew a kiss to her, and then tears fell down my face, "I'm so happy," I smiled, "But I wish I was there to be with you at the scans."
"Esme's getting me a laptop, I'll Skype you at the scans," Alice smiled.
Charlotte and Peter, the married couple who were sharing the apartment with me, peeked their heads around the door.
"We have to go," Peter smiled, and I smiled back, wiping the tears.
"I have to go, Alice," I blew a kiss to her, "I love you."
"I love you, Jasper. Be back soon," Alice smiled, still crying with happiness. I closed my laptop and left my room. We were doing a night safari to check on the animals.
Charlotte looked at me and saw the tears. She was tall and statuesque like Rosalie, but with dark brown hair and green eyes. She looked about twenty-two, and Peter looked about the same age. He was shorter than Charlotte but was still tall. He had short, mouse brown hair and brown eyes.
"Are you alright, Jasper?" Charlotte asked. I nodded and smiled.
"I was talking to my wife," I couldn't help but laugh with happiness, "She's pregnant."
Charlotte smiled and hugged me tight, "That's great! Congratulations, Jasper!"
Peter patted me on the back, "Congratulations, Jasper."
I smiled, "Thanks. We've been trying for a baby for over a year. Alice was losing hope."
"Aww, I'm so happy for you both. Tell her I said my congratulations."
We walked downstairs where the safari truck was waiting for us, but all night I could concentrate on nothing but Alice and our baby.
